Soar High

The center pole of the Amskapi Piikani (Blackfeet) Sundance has tobacco and sage mound-up at the base as an offering through prayers. Colorful ties continue to be wrapped around the trunk of the quaking aspen tree with medicine bags and eagle feathers attached. The buffalo skull and lightning bolt are carved out of the tree and painted red, split at the bottom signifying woman and man. The crux of the "Y" at the top of the tree holds a medicine bundle. The ropes extend to a young Salish Kootenai man who is lifted off the ground and appears floating momentarily. He wears moccasins and a skirt. Around his wrist and ankles are bundles of sage, including the crown around his head. Lastly, he holds eagle feather fans in his hands and blows his eagle bone whistle while he dances to the beat of the drum. (Ink on late 1800's ledger paper)
