Bio for Marjorie Kaniehtonkie Skidders

She:kon! Kaniehtonkie ionkiats. My name is Marjorie Kaniehtonkie Skidders and I'm a member of the Bear Clan of the Mohawks of Akwesasne. I've come full circle in her career as an artist, starting out with a bachelor’s degree in art and turning that into a 25-year career in education as a teacher, Indigenous content curriculum writer and as a school principal. After retiring, I returned back to my roots as an artist focusing on writing and photography. I started showing her photos in native art markets in 2017. Encouraged by the public’s response, I entered her photos in the Ganondagan Museum’s Hodinöhsö:ni’ Art Show and caught the eye of New York State Museum representative, where the NYS Museum purchased one of my photographs for their permanent collection. I'm also an award-winning photographer, winning at the Adirondack Abenaki and Mohawk Art Market, Ganondagan Museum’s Hodinöhsö:ni’ Art Show, and the Akwesasne Travel Art Market. My photo “My Ancestors Are Strong” won an Honorable Mention at the national 2023 Southwest Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA) in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
My photos have been purchased for the permanent collection of the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino and Resort, the New York State Museum, the Onöhsagwë: de’ Cultural Center (Seneca-Allegany), the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, the Iroquois Museum, the Adirondack Experience - Museum on Blue Mountain Lake, St. Lawrence University and Rematriation Magazine. I closed a solo exhibit at my alma mater – St. Lawrence University in the Brush Gallery in the later winter of 2024. My exhibit was called – Photo Voice. My photos were on display this past summer at the Manchester Chamber Gallery, the Positive Street Art Gallery and in SOHO, New York City at 47 Canal. Her photo “My Ancestors Are Strong was acquired by Bader and Simon Gallery, Cincinnati. This past summer I was featured as an ‘Artist in Residence’ at the Frederic Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg, NY. Kaniehtonkie is the former editor of Indian Time Newspaper, located in the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation Territory. I'm looking forward to my artist's residency in January 2026 at the Brush Gallery, St. Lawrence University, Canton, NY
